Why your stream keeps buffering
Buffering is one symptom with about five different causes, and they need different fixes. Here is how to tell them apart, where a VPN genuinely helps, and where it honestly does not.
What buffering actually is
A video player never plays what is arriving right now. It keeps a few seconds of video in a buffer and plays from that, refilling it as it goes. Buffering is what you see when the buffer empties faster than it refills — the player runs out of video and has to wait.
That distinction matters, because it explains why buffering so rarely tracks the number on your internet plan. A stream does not need to arrive quickly. It needs to arrive steadily. A 500 Mbps connection that stalls for two seconds every minute will buffer; a steady 30 Mbps connection will not. Almost everything below is about consistency, not speed.
The five things that cause it
Roughly in the order you are likely to run into them, which is not the order most articles on this subject present them in:
- Wi-Fi between the router and the device. Streaming boxes have small antennas and usually sit behind a television, which is a sheet of metal and glass in the signal path. This is the most common cause by a wide margin.
- The device itself. A streaming stick has a fraction of the memory of a phone. After a few weeks of uptime with a dozen apps installed, it struggles to keep a buffer filled.
- Contention. Other devices in the house, and other homes on your provider’s local segment, all competing at the same time of evening.
- The service. The platform’s own servers have bad nights, and no change at your end will fix one.
- Traffic shaping by your provider. Real, and the one a VPN addresses — but genuinely the least common of the five.
We put shaping last on purpose. Most pages on this topic open with it, because it is the cause a VPN can sell against. It is worth ruling out the other four first, and you will usually find your answer there.
How to tell whether your provider is shaping video traffic
Traffic shaping is when a network treats one kind of traffic differently from another — slowing video while leaving everything else alone. It is legal in many countries and not always disclosed.
A speed test is a poor way to detect it. Speed tests are short, well-known, and frequently exempted from shaping, so they often report the full line rate on a connection where video is being held back. The reliable test is a comparison:
- Play the same title, on the same device, at the same time of day.
- Once with the VPN off, once with it on.
- Change nothing else. If playback is consistently better with the VPN connected, your traffic was being treated differently when it was identifiable.
The reason that works is simple: with the tunnel up, your provider can see that you are connected to a VPN and how much data is moving, but not what kind of traffic it is. There is nothing left to sort on.
What a VPN fixes, and what it does not
Being straight about this is more useful than a sales pitch, and it saves you troubleshooting the wrong thing.
It can help with
- Video traffic being shaped or deprioritised because it is identifiable as video.
- A poor route between your provider and the streaming service, where going via a different network happens to be better.
It will not help with
- A saturated connection, weak Wi-Fi, or a device short on memory.
- The streaming service’s own servers having a bad night.
- A connection that is already marginal — the encryption overhead can make that slightly worse rather than better.
And the thing no VPN does, whatever the marketing says: it does not entitle you to content you do not have the rights to watch. What it changes is who can see what you are doing, which is covered in full on our page about what we log.
Why our OpenVPN is not the slow OpenVPN you have read about
Search for streaming performance advice and you will be told to switch protocol — usually to WireGuard, and away from OpenVPN over TCP. We are not going to give you that advice, because StreamShield runs OpenVPN and we would rather tell you what we actually do about speed than recommend something we do not offer.
Most of OpenVPN’s reputation for being slow comes from default configurations that nobody tuned. Ours are not defaults:
- Cipher negotiation including ChaCha20. This is the one that matters most for a streaming stick. Cheap ARM devices often lack hardware AES acceleration, and on those, AES encryption is done slowly in software. ChaCha20 is dramatically faster on exactly that hardware, and our servers negotiate it with clients that benefit.
- Kernel data-channel offload, where the server’s kernel supports it. Moving the data channel into the kernel removes a large amount of per-packet overhead. It is best-effort by design — where a host cannot load the module, OpenVPN falls back to its userspace data channel rather than failing.
- MSS clamping. Packets that arrive too large for the tunnel get fragmented, and fragmentation produces exactly the stop-start stalls people describe as buffering. Clamping the segment size stops it happening.
- Socket buffers left to the kernel. Modern kernels size these better than a fixed value chosen years ago, so we let them.
None of that is exotic. It is the difference between a tuned server and an out-of-the-box one, and it is why “OpenVPN is slow” is a statement about configuration rather than about the protocol.
Buffering on a Fire Stick specifically
Streaming sticks are where this problem concentrates, and it is nearly always the hardware rather than the network. In rough order of how often they are the answer:
- Signal. The stick is behind the television. Try it on the front of the set, or on an HDMI extender, and see whether anything changes.
- Memory. Close background apps, clear the streaming app’s cache, and restart the device. Sticks that have been powered on for months behave very differently after a restart.
- Power. A stick running from a television’s USB port may not be getting enough current. Use the supplied mains adapter.
- Ethernet. Where the device supports a wired adapter — and some, like the Fire TV Cube, have a port built in — that removes the most common cause outright.

The order to try things in
Change one thing at a time. Changing several at once tells you that something worked, but not which thing, and you will be back here in a fortnight.
- Play the same title on another device. Still bad? The problem is the network, not the device.
- Move the device closer to the router, or wire it.
- Restart the device and clear the app’s cache.
- Retest at a different time of day.
- Test the same title with the VPN on and off, changing nothing else.
- If only the last step made a difference, traffic shaping is the likely cause and a VPN is a real fix rather than a workaround.

Buffering questions
- Does a VPN stop buffering?
- Sometimes, and only for particular causes. If your provider is slowing down video traffic specifically, encrypting it removes the signal they were sorting on, and playback improves. If your connection is simply saturated, your Wi-Fi is weak, or the streaming service itself is struggling, a VPN will not help and can make things slightly worse by adding encryption overhead. It is worth trying because it is quick to test, not because it is a general cure.
- Do internet providers really throttle streaming?
- Some do, and the practice is legal in many places. It usually shows up as video that holds a lower quality than your connection should manage, often at the same time each evening, while everything else feels normal. It is far from the most common cause of buffering though, which is why it is worth ruling out the ordinary explanations first.
- Why does my Fire Stick buffer when my phone does not?
- Usually because the Fire Stick has far less memory and a much weaker Wi-Fi antenna than your phone, and it is often further from the router and behind a television. The stream is the same; the device fetching it is not. Closing background apps, clearing the app cache, and using a wired adapter where the device supports one fix this more often than anything network-related.
- Does a VPN make streaming slower?
- It adds some overhead — your traffic is encrypted and travels through one of our servers rather than straight to the service. On a healthy connection the difference is usually small next to the bandwidth a stream actually needs. On a connection that is already marginal, that overhead can be the thing that tips it over, which is worth knowing before you assume the VPN is at fault.
- Will paying for a faster internet plan fix buffering?
- Only if bandwidth is genuinely the constraint, and it often is not. 4K needs roughly 25 Mbps; most plans sold today clear that comfortably. If you are buffering on a 200 Mbps line, the bottleneck is somewhere between your router and the device, not at the point where the plan is measured.
- Why does buffering only happen in the evening?
- Evening is when the most people are streaming, so it is when contention shows up — in your own home, on your provider’s local segment, and at the streaming service. It is also when time-of-day traffic shaping, where a provider uses it, is most likely to be active. If your playback is fine at midday and poor at nine in the evening, contention or shaping is the likely explanation rather than a fault.
