Installing a VPN on an Onn 4K box

The Onn box ships with a very modest amount of internal storage, and Google TV plus a handful of streaming apps consume most of it before you add anything yourself. When free space runs low the symptoms are not an obvious "disk full" message — they are apps that take a long time to open, updates that fail quietly, and playback that stalls in ways that look like a network fault.

Check what is free before installing, and again if behaviour changes later. Uninstalling one app you never use is frequently the whole fix.

• Remove preinstalled apps you do not use rather than only clearing caches.
• Clear the cache of the streaming app you use most, which is usually the largest consumer.
• Reboot afterwards, since freed space is not always reflected in behaviour until it restarts.

Unlike a Fire TV device, this box has Google Play and does not require developer options to be enabled or a separate utility to fetch files. In practice that means the install is a couple of minutes rather than a procedure.

It also means updates arrive the ordinary way rather than needing to be fetched and installed by hand, which on a device this cheap is a meaningful convenience.

The wireless radio in an inexpensive streamer is not the equal of the one in a phone, and its antenna is smaller. Positioning matters more here than it does on better hardware — behind a television is the worst place for it, and often exactly where it ends up.

If the box supports a USB Ethernet adapter, that removes the variable entirely. Otherwise, getting it out from behind the screen is the cheapest improvement available.

Google TV fills its launcher with recommendations drawn from what the account has watched. Connecting a tunnel hides your traffic from the network carrying it, but it changes nothing about a service you are signed into with your own account — Google still knows what that account watched, because you told it.

Worth saying plainly, because "the VPN will stop them tracking me" is a common expectation and it is only half right. The network operator loses visibility. The platform you logged into does not.

This is an inexpensive device, and encryption is real work. Expect it to manage a VPN with ordinary streaming without complaint, and expect the margin to be thinner than on a Shield or a Cube.

If it struggles, the order to investigate is free storage first, then positioning, then server choice. Changing the server before the first two is how people end up convinced a VPN made their box slow when the box was already full.
